This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director, Legal based in the United States. This is a highly visible opportunity to build and lead the legal function for a fast-growing, privacy-first healthcare technology business. As the first in-house counsel, you will serve as a strategic partner to the CEO and leadership team across commercial, privacy, compliance, corporate, employment, and product matters. You will work directly within the business and deal cycle, helping teams move quickly while managing legal and regulatory risk thoughtfully. The role combines hands-on commercial contracting with privacy-by-design guidance for products and technology handling sensitive healthcare data. You will establish scalable legal processes, playbooks, and frameworks that enable the organization to grow efficiently without unnecessary friction. The environment is entrepreneurial, fast-moving, and highly autonomous, with significant opportunity to shape how the business approaches legal strategy and risk. This role is ideal for a pragmatic legal leader who brings strong judgment, clear communication, and a business-oriented approach to complex technology and privacy challenges. Build the legal function: Establish and lead the in-house legal function, developing scalable processes, workflows, templates, and practices that support a growing technology organization. Commercial contracting: Own commercial agreements end to end across new business, renewals, expansions, partner and agency relationships, and technology and data partnerships. Contracting infrastructure: Develop practical contract templates, negotiation playbooks, and workflows that enable business teams to move efficiently while reducing unnecessary legal friction. Privacy-by-design: Partner closely with Product and Engineering from the earliest stages of development to embed privacy considerations into product and technology decisions rather than treating them as late-stage reviews. Privacy and compliance: Advise leadership and cross-functional teams on data privacy, data protection, security, healthcare-related regulations, and other compliance requirements relevant to products and operations. Strategic risk management: Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO and senior leaders, translating legal risks into practical options that allow the business to pursue opportunities safely and effectively. Corporate legal matters: Support corporate governance, financing, equity, employment, intellectual property, and other legal matters as the organization evolves. Outside counsel: Manage external legal advisors and legal spend strategically, ensuring outside resources are used effectively. Cross-functional partnership: Collaborate closely with executive leadership and teams across Product, Engineering, Sales, and other functions to provide timely, commercially minded legal guidance. Organizational scalability: Develop a proactive, business-first approach to legal operations and risk management that can scale alongside the company's growth. Requirements Legal credentials: Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar. In-house experience: Demonstrated in-house legal experience within a technology or SaaS company, ideally in an earlier-stage, high-growth startup environment. Commercial expertise: Strong experience negotiating, structuring, and managing commercial agreements throughout the customer and vendor lifecycle. Privacy and technology law: Deep familiarity with privacy, data protection, technology transactions, and related regulatory considerations; healthcare regulatory experience is strongly preferred. Business judgment: Ability to balance appropriate legal and regulatory risk management with commercial priorities, customer needs, speed, and business objectives. Strategic partnership: Comfortable advising CEOs and senior executives and influencing decisions thr
